BEAUTIFUL BUFFALO BUFFALO-NEW-YORK-TRAVEL-ART-1,085&ADD-TAS

From the mid-19th to the mid-20th century, the greatest American architects built in Buffalo, N.Y. Today, the city is a vast outdoor museum. Among its many magnificent structures, a few stand out. The massive, brooding, peaked towers of Henry Hobson Richardsonís Buffalo Psychiatric Center are unforgettable. So is the muted, golden light that filters through an intricate stained glass ceiling into the golden lobby of Louis Sullivanís Guaranty building. Or the open yet intimate and perfectly proportioned spaces of Frank Lloyd Wrightís Darwin D. Martin house. All of these buildings were completed around the turn of the 20th century. More recently, Minoru Yamasakiís M&T Bank Building (1964-1966) with its white facade and its vertical lines has become especially precious since the destruction of the World Trade Center towers, designed by Yamasaki several years later. The bank in Buffalo is a poignant reminder of what has been lost. By Terese Loeb Kreuzer. WITH PHOTOS.
